Chapter 34 Stairs

ATSUKO'S POV
To be honest I had doubted that the man really tried to help me, I thought he would lead me to a death trap or get me lost in the darkness, or even that he just was distracting me from going the right way. But my suspicions were put to shame when we actually reached the staircase not too long after he had again tackled me to the ground. My knees were still sore from smashing into the ground so many times, so was the palm of my right hand which in difference from my left, wasn't protected by a glove. What I didn't understand though was why he said I went the wrong way, before we started going up the stairs I made sure not to lose track of where the mirror I tried to go to was placed. Surely, it would have led me to the exact same place the man did, but it would only have taken longer, the man simply had taken me down a faster route. As I walked I gazed up at the man before me who skipped every other step enthusiastically and with ease. In difference from him I was already worn out. The stairs was just like the others I had encountered, slightly curved like a spiral so it felt like I was walking around a pillar, sometimes the man got too far ahead so I could no longer see him because of how the stairs curved, but I could hear him chanting for me to either hurry up, give it my all, or over and over ask if I was "okay down there".

There was however one big difference to this staircase compared to the others, it felt like we have walked forever, yet we hadn't come to any other floor then the one we started on. In the other staircases there were only a few turns around the pillar before you came to another floor. Again the man disappeared before me around the pillar, trying to speed up not to lose him I felt my steps getting heavier, my heart beats rougher and my breaths jagged. I wouldn't be able to keep this speed up much longer, if I wanted to make it to whatever floor there was in these stairs, I would have to slow down. Deciding to give up on getting back behind the man, I slowed down more and more so, before I finally sat down and with a sigh rested my elbows on my knees and my chins in my hands.
'The latest letter said rest properly right?' , I snorted at the lame excuse for a few minutes of just sitting on my buttocks being unproductive. With closed eyes I heard how the man continued upwards and his steps became quiet and distant and soon I could not hear them at all.
'Perhaps it's best to split with him anyway. He just confuses me.'
"Are you okay down there?! ATSUKO?!"
'Of course not."
"I'm fine!", I called back over my shoulder, just as I assumed I soon heard rushed steps down the stairs and soon he stood a few steps below me with crooked back, looking straight into my face.
"Why are you stopping?"
"I'm tired."
He cooked his head to the side but remained silent, thinking that he would wait for me till I could continue I looked down at my feet with an exhausted frown.
"You should smile more Atsuko."
I grunted loudly and lifted my head to answer him, only to look straight into my own smiling face. Surprised I panicky crawled a few steps backwards up the stairs staring at what appeared to be me. It had to be me, even the chakra texture was the same, the only things lacking was that I couldn't feel any emotions, that version of me didn't have the Anteishita Enkotsu. Suddenly her smile was replaced with a gaping mouth and she lifted her arms.
"I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to scare you!"
My features ran away from the man and again he stood completely white and blank, except the swirls around his body, before me, like an unwritten piece of paper, ready to take on any form that was wished of it. Holding what I think would count as eye-contact, I stood up, brushed off some dust from my clothes and backed up until I could no longer see the man, who still had his hands raised, around the pillar. Then turned and with one hand on the outer wall, started walking quickly.
"Ah? Atsuko! Wait! I won't do it again I promise!"

"You're not angry are you?"
"Not at all."
"You look angry."
"I can assure you, I'm not."
"I just wanted you to see how much better it would be if you smiled!"
"Then give me something to smile about, Senkai-kun."
"Senkai-kun?"
"I have to call you something, now don't I?", I turned my head to him to see his reaction to his new nickname, he had his hand covering his cheeks as if he was blushing, but then suddenly pointed to my face and laughed.
"You're smiling!"
And here it is the Chapter 34.
